Meningococcal C (MenC) immunisation programme

From 1 July 2024, a MenC-containing vaccine is no longer required in infancy. Protection against MenC will be provided as part of the combined MenACWY vaccine offered to young people in school year 9 or 10 (with opportunities for catch-up until their 25th birthday).

Meningococcal disease is caused by invasive infection with the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, also known as the meningococcus.

There are 12 identified serogroups of which groups B, C, W and Y were historically the most common in the UK.

Since the introduction of the routine MenC vaccination programme, cases of invasive meningococcal disease in the UK due to serogroup C have reduced dramatically and the indirect protection achieved by vaccinating adolescents with MenACWY vaccine means that MenC disease is now extremely rare.

Joint UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS England letter announcing the MenC vaccination schedule changes.

Please refer to the Green Book chapters on meningococcal disease.

Data and reports on the uptake of NHS routine vaccines for England are published by UKHSA.

More information on Meningococcal disease is available on and on 51²è¹Ý.

Immunisation patient group direction (PGD) templates are available for authorisation and adoption to provide NHS routine immunisation services.

‘Immunisation against infectious disease’, also known as the Green Book, has the latest information on vaccines and vaccination procedures in the UK.

Any adverse events should be documented in the patient notes and reported to the MHRA through the Yellow Card reporting system.

Healthcare professionals should contact their local health protection team with any queries.
