Research background
The Planning and Preparing for Later Life (PPLL) 2024 was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide up to date information on people’s attitudes and behaviours around planning for retirement. PPLL collected data from a nationally representative sample of 4,036 adults aged 40 to 75 in Great Britain.
The survey had four main objectives:
- To understand attitudes and behaviours around pension saving and planning for later life,
- To provide evidence to support policy development around income adequacy in retirement,
- To gather evidence on attitudes and knowledge around the State Pension system,
- To gather evidence on the value consumers place on DWP produce, policies, and services.
Contribution to the evidence base
This survey is the second in the series, following on from the first wave of PPLL, conducted in 2020 to 2021.
Research value
Survey evidence is being used to inform policy development across DWP, particularly on attitudes to pensions and saving behaviours. For example, the findings have fed into Impact Assessments for the Pension Schemes Bill and will be of importance to the Pensions Commission.
