During week 34, syndromic indicators for the impact of heat decreased, in line with the cooler weather across England. Syndromic indicators of acute respiratory infections across all systems were stable or decreased, including those for COVID-19-like patient contacts, with decreased COVID-19-like GP consultation rates, while emergency department (ED) COVID-like attendances remained stable.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ decreased in line with cooler weather across England. NHS 111 triaged calls for eye problems increased nationally during the public holiday weekend (Saturday 23 to Monday 25 August).

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 34 COVID-19-like GP consultation rates decreased nationally and across all age groups. Other respiratory indicators were stable or decreased and similar or below seasonally expected levels. Consultation rates for heat or sunstroke and insect bites decreased in line with the cooler temperatures experienced across England.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for heat or sunstroke decreased in line with cooler weather across England. Contacts for difficulty breathing, wheeze or asthma increased nationally, particularly in adults aged 15 to 44 years.
Please note: trends for week 34 should be interpreted with caution. We are investigating a potential change in coding practice by one GP out-of-hours service provider during week 32 (from Monday 4 August) which may have impacted on national trends, causing small increases in some syndromic indicators.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, COVID-19-like ED attendances remained stable nationally, however there was a slight increasing trend in the East of England region. ED attendances for heat or sunstroke decreased, in line with cooler weather across England.

During week 34, daily ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ continued to decrease, in line with cooler weather across England.
