Details

Routine reports on a range of travel-associated infections reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since 2015. Two types of reports are published:

  • National reports based on data confirmed by UKHSA national reference laboratories. These summarise the epidemiology of travel-associated infections in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, using data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Rare and imported pathogens laboratory (RIPL) and Gastrointestinal bacteria reference unit (GBRU).

  • Regional reports based on UKHSA case management systems (HPZone until mid-2024, then CIMS), used by health protection teams (HPTs) in England. These cover only infections that require HPT follow-up and include cases recorded with recent foreign travel. They reflect operational data and are limited to regions in England.

Differences in data sources, coverage and reporting pathways mean that case numbers may vary between report types. Case management system data may also underestimate true numbers as it depends on reporting to HPTs and accurate recording of travel history.

Further information and guidance is available on dedicated pages for chikungunya, cholera, dengue, yellow fever and Zika.

Detailed annual reports are available elsewhere for imported malaria cases in the UK and travel-associated enteric fever cases in EWNI.
