Report a notifiable disease

Registered medical practitioners: report cases of suspected notifiable infectious diseases or manage an existing notification.

Applies to England

Use this service to:Ā 

  • report a suspected case of a notifiable diseaseĀ 
  • report any other suspected infectious disease that may present a significant risk to human healthĀ Ā 
  • continue or manage existing notificationsĀ 

You can use this service if you are:Ā 

  • a  registered medical practitioner
  • acting on behalf of a registered medical practitionerĀ 

It should take about 3 minutes.Ģż

Before you startĀ 

Check which diseases are notifiable by law.

You’ll need to know the:Ā 

  • suspected disease and when symptoms startedĀ 
  • registered medical practitioner’s contact detailsĀ 
  • patient consultation date and locationĀ 
  • patient’s detailsĀ and contact information, or their parent or guardian’s details if they are under 18Ā 

You’ll also be asked for the patient’s:Ā 

  • NHS number, if knownĀ 
  • ethnicity, if knownĀ 
  • overseas travel, if relevantĀ 
  • occupation, if relevantĀ 

Sign in using an NHS.net or UK Health Security Agency email address.Ģż

If the case is an urgent notifiable disease, you must also report it by telephone to your local  UKHSA health protection team.

When to reportĀ 

Report as soon as possible, or within:Ā 

  • 24 hours for urgent casesĀ Ā 
  • 3 days for routine casesĀ 

Do not wait for laboratory confirmation of the disease. By law, you must report any suspicion of a notifiable disease.
