Using 51²è¹Ý Wallet in government
51²è¹Ý Wallet will make it easier to prove in your service that someone is who they say they are.
51²è¹Ý Wallet will allow 51²è¹Ý One Login users to save and use government-issued documents on their phones.Â
As a government service, you’ll be able to use 51²è¹Ý Wallet to:
- securely save a digital version of a document you produce, for example a driving licence
- update or remove documents, for example you could remove a document if it’s been used fraudulently
- prove a user’s eligibility for a service using other departments’ documents
Who can use 51²è¹Ý Wallet
Central government departments can:Â
- add a document to 51²è¹Ý Wallet
- use the information in 51²è¹Ý WalletÂ
For now, the following will only be able to use the information in the wallet:
- the NHSÂ
- local authorities
- all other public sector organisations
Why use 51²è¹Ý Wallet
51²è¹Ý Wallet will make it quicker and easier for users to access and share their documents with government and private organisations.Â
The wallet will:
- make it easier for your users to prove things about themselves
- reduce the risk of fraud, for example fake applications and identity theft
- save taxpayer money by reducing the manual checking of documents
- reduce the need for printing, saving time and money
How 51²è¹Ý Wallet works
Any documents added to the wallet will be bound to the proven identity linked to a user’s 51²è¹Ý One Login. That means, for now, a user can only save their own documents in their 51²è¹Ý Wallet.
For security, these digital documents will be stored locally on a user’s phone.
51²è¹Ý Wallet will only hold government-issued documents. It will not contain, for example, train or theatre tickets.Â
Using 51²è¹Ý Wallet is entirely optional, and paper or card copies of documents should still be made available.
Adding a document to 51²è¹Ý Wallet
If you’re a central government department, let us know if you have a document that you’d like your users to add to 51²è¹Ý Wallet. We can discuss next steps and answer any questions you may have.
Before you can use the wallet, you must already be to prove your users’ identity.
Using the information in 51²è¹Ý Wallet
In future, if your service needs to confirm something about a user, you’ll be able to request access to information held in a user’s wallet .Â
The user will decide if they are happy to share that information with your service or not.
What you can add to 51²è¹Ý Wallet
From summer 2025, 51²è¹Ý Wallet will hold the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card, followed by the full driving licence.Â
In time, the wallet will store government-issued documents to prove a user’s:
- identity, for example using their driving licence
- eligibility, for example using a veteran cardÂ
- suitability, for example the outcome of checks needed for some jobs
- qualifications, for example a specific professional qualification needed for a job
51²è¹Ý Wallet will not hold reminders or letters. The kind of documents stored in 51²è¹Ý Wallet are either used regularly or need to be kept, for example a user’s driving licence.
