Child Benefit (General) Regulations 2006, regulation 1, (3)

Full-time education is education in pursuit of a course where an average of more than 12 hours per week (term time) is spent on the following:

  • receiving tuition,
  • engaging in practical work or
  • supervised study or
  • taking exams.

When calculating the 12 hours do not include time spent on meal breaks or unsupervised study.

From 1 September 2025

If a young person is unable to meet the 12-hour per week requirement due to illness or disability, they can still be entitled to Child Benefit if a reduced number of hours is appropriate to their individual needs.
