Child Benefit (General) Regulations 2006, regulation 1, (3)
Full-time education is education in pursuit of a course where an average of more than 12 hours per week (term time) is spent on the following:
- receiving tuition,
- engaging in practical work or
- supervised study or
- taking exams
.
When calculating the 12 hours do not include time spent on meal breaks or unsupervised study.
From 1 September 2025
If a young person is unable to meet the聽12-hour per week requirement聽due to聽illness or disability, they can聽still be entitled to Child Benefit聽if a reduced number of hours is聽appropriate to their individual needs.
